When you specify an ACEX® 1K, APEX II, APEX 20K, FLEX 10KE, MAX® 3000, MAX 7000, or Stratix device for a design, you can transfer the design from the device to a larger or smaller FineLine BGA® device or to a larger or smaller device with equivalent pin-outs, while maintaining the same board layout and pin assignments. This process is called "device migration."
Before you compile a design, you can use the Migration Devices dialog box, which is available from the Device page in the Settings dialog box (Assignments menu), to specify the compatible ACEX 1K, APEX II, APEX 20K, FLEX 10KE, MAX 3000, MAX 7000, or Stratix devices you want to use as migration devices for the design's target device. The Compiler then attempts to create a board layout and pin assignments for the design that are compatible with the target device as well as the migration devices you selected.
The Compiler considers all of the migration devices you specified when creating board layout and pin assignments; therefore, specifying migration devices may reduce the number of available pins in the target device and the likelihood of achieving a successful fit.
