When you close a window, you do not necessarily close the file. You must close all open windows to close the file. You can find out how many windows are open for a file by checking the bottom of the Window menu.
If you edit a file without saving, you are asked whether you wish to save the changes. Click Yes to save the changes, or No to discard the edits.
