Overview: Archiving Projects

The Quartus® II archive feature allows you to archive a project and its related files in a single, compressed Quartus II Archive File (.qar) and then restore the project at a later point in time. The archive feature provides a method of backing up a project and its related files, and enables the transfer of a project and its multiple related files in the form of a single QAR File.

A QAR File can contain all the files related to a project, including output files from compilation and simulation, system library files, and HardCopy files. When creating a new QAR File, the Quartus II software automatically adds files necessary to the successful functioning of a project, such as design files and source files, but you can choose to add or remove files from the QAR File before archiving the project. Each QAR File has an associated Quartus II Archive Log File (.qarlog) that contains information about the QAR File, such as a list of the QAR File's contents, user comments, and any errors encountered during archiving.

When you restore a project from a QAR File, you can choose to view the QARLOG File and select the destination folder for the QAR File's contents. You can restore the contents of a QAR File multiple times.
